History
The concept for the group came to be when long time local jazz musicians Ben Wilmore and Gustavo Lizarraga, who have played together since high school, joined forces out of a desire to play more
than just the typical “bring your Realbook” jazz gigs. Ben had been intensely studying and listening to more current works by musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ben Allison and Ben Monder. The duo contacted longtime drummer friend Shaun Oster who in turn brought in bassist Sam McKinney. Since that time the group has been rehearsing and performing works by the above mentioned artists/composers, as well as new originals and other contemporary works.

Current status
Currently, the group has been performing at various venues and events including First Thursdays. Defkhan Jazz is constantly searching and expanding its' repertoire. The group is also working on developing original works that more closely reflect current jazz idioms, which are currently underrepresented locally.
