Genres: Hawaiian, World

Sound description: Full of aloha spirit, Kaleo Na’ea of Kaua’i brings Hawaii to you with solo to full band and hula! Kaleo plays traditional and slack-key guitar and sings in Hawaiian. His four-piece string band features the Hawaiian steel guitar’s magical slides and glides, the ukulele strumming sweetly, and the bass a swingin’, is a pupu plater of island sing and swing. Songs that range from touchingly sweet traditional to fun hapa-haole classics that will set your toes tapping and your hips swaying as you are serenaded to tropical paradise.

Kaleo began performing beautiful island music in 1997 and formed a full band in 2007. Kaleo was kama’aina (island born) in 1973 and raised on Kaua’i. His great-grandmother’s great-grandfather is Kaumuali’i, Kauai’s last king. Kaleo’s a descendant of George Na’ea, birth father of Hawaii’s Queen Emma Na’ea Rooke. Kaleo learned about island history and the ways and spirit of aloha from his tutu (grandmother), Kamanao Na’ea, who was a guitarist, singer, and narrator at the Kodak Hula Show in Waikiki for two decades. She taught him to play and sing Hawaiian music from the day he was born until he moved to Santa Barbara in 1987, where he studied with many guitar masters over the next 20 years.
