How come you're not commenting on the Pappas-Farr race? There seems to be more controversy on that one and is one that affect us (in SB) more.

This is a 0.21% spread in favor of Strickland, or rounded to a one-fifth of one percent margin.
This final vote result for the whole tortuous Senate District includes all the Strickland votes from Santa Clarita in Los Angeles County, and excludes Santa Paula and Fillmore and Piru, which are out of the Senate District and 7 years ago some thought were communities having more in common with Victorville and Palmdale than with the rest of Ventura County.
Jackson beat Strickland by 11.33% margin in Santa Barbara County.
For an undefended (no incumbent) contest where an opponent spends several more million $$ for factually-challenged advertising, that is a whopping margin of victory for Jackson in Santa Barbara County and so painfully means that nearly all Democrats in this county voted for Jackson.

And in other news...
"Goletan" may not know the Third District contest is over, every provisional and legal vote has been counted, and Doreen Farr won by a 2.27% margin.
A "controversy" does not exist just because one writes that word.
And I believe this Capitol Letters column/blog is about the capitol of the State of California.

What "controversy?"
Posted by jerryroberts on December 5 at 3:06 p.m.
Note to cookie jill: The 3rd district supes race between Doreen Farr and Steve Pappas was also close, but not nearly as close as the 19th, measured as a percentage of the total vote. Farr won by 806 votes which, as David points out above, is more than 2 percent; the registrar's certified report has it:
Farr 18,165 (51.00)
Pappas 17,359 (48.73)
The print edition of the Independent reports this week that, despite the numbers, Pappas has not yet conceded. Controversy? You be the judge. Thanks for reading.

As no controversy is out there about disputed vote counts, hanging chads, or unfilled bubbles, the only "controversy" here seems to be that Pappas is or is becoming a sore loser and accordingly is going to guarantee that he gets no committee or other advisory appointments from the new 3rd District Supervisor.
Doreen seems to me like she would embrace the Obamanian concept of a cabinet of rivals, but the defeated rival first needs to admit defeat from a tough, but completed, fight.
Here is the Indy news brief hinting about any controversy:
http://www.independent.com/news/2008/dec...
If the Isla Vista and UCSB voters were mostly Republican, then Pappas and his friends instead would be praising them as engaged community activists voting their rights to support a Republican or republican winner in this election. But considering that IV and UCSB voters are mostly Democrats, this becomes a "controversy".

Since the conversation has turned a bit to the 3rd District, I'll chime in.
Nancy Crawford-Hall, Santa Ynez Valley Journal publisher and Pappas donor (to the tune of more than $100K), has hinted in recent columns that there were voter irregularities and that Pappas had retained legal services from election law specialists.
Her most recent column can be found here: http://www.syvjournal.com/archive/6/49/3...
Pappas, who hasn't returned my phone calls this week, responded via email, saying that because of "recent developments" he couldn't comment. Today in an email he said "we are under in a legal environment" (there obviously is an extra word in there, though I'm not sure which one). That's all he's said to me.
Clerk-Recorder Joe Holland has expressed confidence everything was done legally and above board this election.
We're staying on the story...if it turns out there is one.

OK, it's over, and it's a wash: The conservatives got a victory in Strickland, and the liberals got one in Farr.

Good grief, The Old Guard continues to P&M about student voters in IV. Nothing seems to have changed since 1972, when I turned 18 and voted that November for the first time and every-chance-since then, always as a proud and contributing member of the south coast community.
To quote the Bushies from December 2000 to very recently, and the Yes on 8 people most recently, "Get Over It!" You came out with the short stick, and don't like it?--don't mourn, organize!

Wow, Nancy Crawford-Hall really lost her temper in that op-ed piece...
http://www.syvjournal.com/archive/6/49/3...
She refers to UCSB students as `outsiders'... hmmm... there have been UCSB students in our County since 1944 (or 1909 or so if you count the preceding State College).
Has Nancy Crawford-Hall been here that long?
Santa Barbara County sure wants all the $ those students spend here, from groceries to rent to dates at restaurants to family visits at graduation.
But if those students want to vote (entirely legally) in local elections, people like Crawford-Hall start to wail and moan.
All her and Steve Pappas are doing are making sure he can't win in 2012.

Goodbye, Hannabeth...and GOOD RIDDANCE. Time to get out there and look for a JOB where you actually DO something besides run for office. Just because one has a big mouth and is willing to shoot it off constantly, that hardly makes one a leader. Finally. Thank our lucky stars.

Hannabeth Did a wonderful job. She worked for all the people in her district. It is too bad the election went so negative. I guess, such a negative campaine the most negative candidate wins. I hope Mr. Strickland will work for all the people in the district. I hope I'm wrong, but I think, mr. Strickland will only help people who will help him.

The depths of ignorance continue to amaze me. The only candidate here with a razor-thin, if not empty, portfolio of "real" jobs outside the legislature, is Phony Tony. Look it up. And while you're at it, look up Carpetbagger McClintock's curriculum vitae.

Hey, @ least Hannah Beth Jackson taught other politicians to turn off the intercom in the room before going into detail about partisan plots to play partisan politics @ the expense of the constituency. Many on both sides of the aisle owe her for that :) henry

The media and the taxpayers of the 19th should establish an online "Strickland Watch" and post daily updates of all the wonderful things Tony is doing for the residents of the Central Coast. A good start would be to see how many jobs his GreenWave "company" is creating.
