UCSB Conference on Nanotechnology Health and Safety
When: Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: UCSB Corwin Pavilion, 564 Ucen Road, Isla Vista, CA
Cost: Not available
Age limit: All ages
Categories: Citizen's Alert
Description: Nanotechnology - the creation of new materials with novel properties at near-atomic scales - is predicted to be a $3 trillion industry within the next decade. While some concern has been raised over the safety of using nanoparticles in consumer products, little public attention has been given to health and safety issues in laboratories where they are made, or workplaces where they are fashioned into products.
This conference will address these concerns. It will bring together 40 science and toxicology experts, union leaders, government officials, and social scientists to examine issues relating to potential risks involved for laboratory and factory nanotechnology workers, and examine ways to limit those risks.
The two-day conference begins Friday November 16 at 9:00, and runs through Saturday afternoon. Friday sessions are in UCSB's Corwin Pavilion; Saturday's are in UCSB's Multicultural Center Theater. The keynote address on Friday evening is by Joan Denton, Director of the State of California Office of Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and member of the California Green Chemistry Leadership Council. Her talk is entitled "Nano: We are What We Were Then."
