Description: The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent monotypes by local artist Gary Chafe. These works on paper explore the visual vocabulary of land, sea and sky with wonderful sensitivity to color, light and texture.
The artist portrays “the beauty and mystical allure of living in Santa Barbara” without representing specific places. Working with oil-based inks on a copper plate, Chafe creates simplified landscapes with an expressive technique. The sublime shades of blue are particularly compelling. He uses an etching press to print his primarily vertical images on Japanese rice paper. Each composition is unique, hence the name monotype.
