Fire Safety/Public Education

When: Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: 4511 Auhay Dr.

Cost: Free

Age limit: All ages

Categories: Citizen's Alert

Description: All members of the general public who visit will be escorted by Santa Barbara County and City firefighters and will be able to see the devastation that a fire can do. They will see and learn about safety appliances and features that protect a house, witness the destruction and loss from an actual fire, and also talk to firefighters about being safe in their own home. The County and City Fire Departments will also have a display of fire fighting apparatus for viewing, parked in front of the house.

Use of houses damaged by fire, for fire safety education, is a program that was first developed in 1986 by members of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. This program has been repeated more than a dozen times since the first “Open Fire Safety House” was presented to the general public. More than 5000 community members, parents and children, have taken the opportunity to learn from experiencing the site where a fire has damaged a home and by talking to firefighters about protecting their own house. This open house is extremely timely because of the high number of house fires that have occurred in Santa Barbara County in the last few years. Several homes have been seriously damaged and several lives have been lost. Others were lucky to have survived those fires and narrowly escaped, usually due to the presence of a working smoke alarm. By marking this event with an “Open Fire Safety House” it is the intention of SB County and City firefighters to alert all residents of our communities that their lives and property are at higher risk of loss without functioning smoke detectors.
