Description: In conjunction with the IHC’s “Food Matters” program, UCSB's Department of English is organizing an interdisciplinary conference that will address the closely related topics of food sustainability and food security. The conference aims to provide a forum for sharing recent research findings in this area and to investigate the future of food studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. In response to current international conflicts over hunger, food prices, and genetically modified seeds, the matter of food has become central to both environmental and economic policymaking. In this context, the interdisciplinary field of food studies has a new purchase. This conference will gather some of the country's leading food scholars – many of whom are affiliated with the UC system – to examine the meaning of food sustainability in particular regional contexts from Africa to the Middle East to the Americas. The conference will provide a timely occasion for scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and sciences as well as activists and farmers to engage in dialogue about the global food system in both contemporary and historical contexts.
