Description: It’s time to pay RENT in Santa Barbara! Stage Left Productions is the first theatre company in Santa Barbara to present Jonathan Larson’s hit musical, RENT. High school productions of this musical featuring AIDS, sexual diversity and drug use have been a national news story this year. But the themes of acceptance, oneness, and "No day but today" seem more relevant than ever.
RENT is a rock opera with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera, La Boheme. It tells the unforgettable story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City. Confronting poverty, addiction, illness and the AIDS epidemic, these young artists strive to get ahead, find acceptance, fall in love and above all, establish a connection to their world and each other.
Stage Left Productions is a local youth theater program founded by Shana Lynch Arthurs and Steven Lovelace. This is a new (and not uncontroversial) foray into mature theater, for which they assembled a wonderfully talented group of Santa Barbarans including college (Yale, Emerson, Stanford, NYU, UCSB, to name a few) and local high school actors to take Santa Barbara where it has never gone before.
