Channel Islands National Park in cooperation with the California Department of Fish and Game, and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has monitored the kelp forests around the Channel Islands since 1982. The Kelp Forest Monitoring was one of the first “vital signs” Inventory and Monitoring programs implemented by the National Park Service. The program has been collecting baseline population data on over 70 species of algae, invertebrates and fish for 28 years. Information garnered from the program has aided fishery management decisions and the establishment of marine reserves.
