NO Indoor Voices Writing Workshop Intensive with comic Kimmie Dee: November 12th & 13th in Santa Barbara. Only The Serious Need Apply

NO INDOOR VOICES: an unconventional workshop geared to discover, extract, enhance and fully express a writer’s voice through the art form of spoken word.

Through a series of exercises, I will guide each attendee to her/his own understanding of humor and the thin line between comedy and tragedy. We’ll use techniques that encourage participants to break free from comfort zones, emotional boundaries and safe places and allow them a direct connection to their work. The ultimate goal is to create a place where risks are demanded and the motto is “Go Big or Go Home!”

“What makes my work something anyone will want to read or hear?”

For many writers, striking a balance between conflict and resolve, comedy and tragedy is a sticking point. Whether you’re a novelist, a poet or a stand up comic this method of exploration carries the writer from solitary confinement to performance.

Not for the faint of heart, this workshop isn’t interested in political correctness but rather the raw emotions writers and performers mine in order to get to the meat of their work. WARNING: IF YOU DON’T HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR, if you don’t like frank discussion, profanity, thoughts other than your own, or use of/being on video tape this is not the experience for you.

Day One: 1.) Introductions, goals of class/writers as individuals, writing assignment. Break: 2.) First Amendment-Writers learn to push boundaries. Break: 3.) Writing on your feet. Improvisational exercises loosen up muscles, ideas and opportunity. Homework

Day Two: Listening. We have two ears and one mouth so why do most people talk more than listen? We’ll do some listening exercises and work on monologues. Break: Q&A: As a result of my connections with many writers in the field of spoken word performance, stand up comedy, production, etc., participants will have guest speakers to entertain, as well as ask questions on writing, performance, etc. Special Guest this Workshop: The Incomparable Purveyor of Fine Words and Phrases: Dylan Brody

In order to maintain an intimate integrity in the class, a minimum of 5 students, no more than 10, are required.

Saturday, November 12, 2011: 9 am -3 pm.
Sunday, November 13, 2011: 11 am-4 pm.
