"Unity March" sounds good. Forgive me for suspecting that "unity" might mean communism. But I remember the 1970s. I saw him speak at Campbell Hall, and was surprized at how mellow & soft-spoken he was. At one (and only one) point in his lecture, he raised his hand (not even in a fist) for emphasis, and a sea of flashbulbs went off. On the other hand, one of his security thugs tried to prevent me from leaving just a bit early.

Note to young people: he was against immigration (at least the illegal kind) because it diluted the bargaining leverage of those farmworkers already in the USA. And I don't mean that as a criticism, by the way. Fieldwork looks brutal now, but it was far worse back when.

In 1969 Cesar Chavez along with Walter Mondale and the Rev. Abernathy marched to the Mexican border to protest illegal immigration and the use of same as strikebreakers. Some Democrats in the 1960s realized that illegal immigration was being used to reinforce corporate power and reduce wages.

But since then, the Democratic party has realized that the children of illegal immigrants will guarantee a permanent Democratic majority in California and perhaps nationwide.
