Description:

The ideological ferment stirred by the American Revolution and the religioius Great Awakening inspired many women, the "Daughters of Liberty", and raised expectations of new opportunities for freedom, equality and self definition. A call for the "Equality of the Sexes" was put forth philosophically by Judith Sargent Murray and later by the abolitionist, Sarah Grimke. Elizabeth Cady Stanton continuted the call with her radical advocacy for women's equality and civil rights. The ideas of these courageous thinkers will be discussed in relation to the expanding understanding of the American Dream.
