Local audiences have just one chance to see Lit Moon’s production of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” before the company travels to perform it at two separate theatre festivals in the Balkans this summer. The celebrated production, which premiered in Santa Barbara in October 2012, is performed Sunday, July 7 at 7 p.m. at the Center Stage Theatre.
The show brims over with humor, resistance, and love,” wrote Charles Donelan in the Independent. “The actors play multiple roles, and do so smoothly and convincingly,” noted Justine Sutton of Noozhawk. “(The actors) seem not to be acting parts, but to have internalized the characters, to be channeling them through every fiber of their being.”
The festivals on Lit Moon’s summer itinerary include the Butrinti 2000 Festival in Butrint, Albania, and the Bitola International Shakespeare Festival in Bitola, Macedonia. In Butrint, they join companies from Albania, Spain, Bulgaria, and others in a third century BCE open-air amphitheater. In Bitola, the company is among national theatres from Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, and China, as well as the Vera Kommissarzhevska Theatre from St. Petersburg, and Nina Sallinen from Finland, who appeared at the 2008 Lit Moon World Shakespeare Festival and received one of that year’s Independent Theatre Awards.
