Intrepid ocean lifeguards will compete in an endurance race.

The job of being a professional lifeguard requires you to be able to respond to extreme ocean conditions at a moment’s notice. Lifeguards must have high levels of physical fitness in order to complete in their daily job duties, and what better way to stay in shape than competing in “The Quest”. On July 22nd, at 5:00 am, Lifeguards from the region and other athletes will participate in this challenging endurance race to called “The Quest”.
“The Quest” is a competitive endurance race that begins at Carpinteria State Beach Lifeguard Headquarters and finishes at San Buenaventura State Beach Lifeguard Headquarters. Competitors must run the beach the entire way for the grueling 18 miles. When guards encounter areas that are impassable they must swim around them. The event is scheduled to coincide with a very low tide making this event predominately a running race with around 500 meters of swimming along the way.
“This event does not emphasized the competition but is more about friends sharing a great accomplishment and getting their morning workout in along the beautiful coastline of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties” stated James Bray, California State Park Lifeguard Supervisor. “There are no prizes and no awards other than the satisfaction of completing this grueling lifeguard endurance event.
