I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival
The first festival of its kind in North America features an Italian tradition from the 16th Century—street painting—using chalk pastels on pavement.

On the Memorial Day weekend, 300 artists and young people transform the Old Mission plaza with 150 colorful, large-scale street paintings. The artists (madonnari) begin drawing on Saturday and continue throughout the three-day festival. For 25,000 annual visitors, each day the festival also features live music on the Mission lawn, authentic Italian cuisine, specialty items, and a street painting area just for children.
