Directed by Antonio Von Hildebrand, Lawrence Elman | UK / COLOMBIA | 2010 | 90min | Subtitled | (Q&A)
Recounting the life of perhaps the most prolific alpha dog in our recent history is not an easy task, especially when the beast in question is the infamous drug lord, Pablo Escobar. The Colombian docu/mockumentary, PABLO’S HIPPOS, is able to do just that in a unique and riveting fashion, making this film truly original. Recalling the facts from Escobar’s reign is his beloved hippo, dubbed “Pablo” for his uncanny resemblance in stature to the cocaine king himself. With this unusual narrator, the viewer has the opportunity to see Escobar not only as the cruel, rebellious villain, but also as the man looking to give something back to the peasantry of Colombia. Many viewed Escobar as the exception to the rule that if you are born poor, you will stay poor. He may have been a monster, but there are always two sides to every story, and this film does its best to shed light on his other side. - Julia Speace
