The Mourning Forest (Mogari no mori)
Rating: NR
Synopsis:
Set in the breathtaking mountainous region of Tawara in western Japan sits a small retirement home, bordered by an enormous forest. Old Shigeki, who suffers from senile dementia, resides there. He has a special relationship with Machiko, a nurse in the home that pays particular attention to him. After celebrating Shigekis birthday, Machiko decides to take him on a drive into the forest. A car accident that forces their vehicle into a ditch leaves them stranded. They embark on a path of discovery together and after two exhausting days, arrive at Shigekis wifes tomb. Connected by their similar loss, they help each other regain their sense of identity while also subsequently redefining them. The film beautifully engages tradition with a modern awareness to create a poetic visual masterpiece.
