The Unknown Woman (Sconosciuta, La)
Rating: NR
Synopsis:
Irena flees from a sordid past in Eastern Europe to northern Italy to start anew. This proves impossible as the two parts of her life that she wishes to keep separate become eternally entwined. As her story unfolds, the truth is revealed about the ruthless, vile men who have victimized her. It becomes clear that she has a past that is not easily forgotten, with her one solace being the cherished memory of a lost love. Irena pursues work as a cleaning lady for the wealthy Adacher family across the street, and Irena gains a measure of power over the young daughter as they become more and more attached. Nothing will stop Irena from getting closer to the family, and it becomes evident that her employment was not a coincidence. Giuseppe Tornatore directs this dark and brutal film about the impossibility and hopelessness in trying to run away from a past that will, inevitably, follow.
