Directed by Maria Sødahl | NORWAY | 2010 | 105min | Subtitled
Sonia and her two children arrive in Trinidad to join her husband Jo who is working as an oil engineer. She is introduced to a roaming group of professional men who have the whole world as their workplace and to their wives who follow them wherever their husbands’ contracts take them. Set in the 1970s ex-pat milieu in Trinidad, LIMBO reveals a life in exile, where everything appears to be a never-ending holiday with luxury, parties, servants, and cultural isolation. The days are uneventful and blend together as the women nurse their superficial relationships poolside over cocktails—the perfect climate for self-delusion. A feature film debut for director Maria Sødahl, LIMBO is a film about love, betrayal and desperation in a country far from home—a “coming-of-age” story for adults. - Julia Speace
