Reaching more than 135,000 readers in Santa Barbara County each Thursday with in-depth news reporting, the most extensive calendar of local events, and the best arts and entertainment coverage in the region, the "Music Writer Contest" brings an opportunity for young writers, connected with the pop, rock and jazz music genres to share their writing talent with the community. Formal experience is not necessary to apply!

Applicants must submit a 250 word response to the question, "Why do I want to be a music writer?" and, if available, copies of previously published work (from school newspapers, etc.)

A group of young pop/rock writers will publish their work each week, and these contestants will be given assignments that will appear in both print and online editions of the Santa Barbara Independent that will be voted on by readers. The writer with the least amount of votes will be eliminated each week until one writer remains!

The winning writer will get their name in the masthead as a contributor and will get the opportunity of writing a review/preview of one of the shows that will be at the Santa Barbara County Bowl this summer!
