Ambush Rape Alleged in Isla Vista

A female Isla Vista resident and UCSB student reported to the IV Foot Patrol that she was raped by a stranger outside her apartment building on the 6600 block of Picasso Road. The woman alleged that she was returning to her home from downtown Santa Barbara at about 2:30 on Sunday morning when a man grabbed her from behind, forcer her against a wall and sexually assaulted her. According to police reports, the woman did not know the man. The man was last scene wearing a gray sweater. As the case is an on-going investigation, no further details are available at this time.

Sgt. Eric Rainey, public information officer for the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department, said that the attack was the first of its type that the officers in I.V. have investigated this year. The majority of sexual assault cases reported in I.V. are of the acquaintance rape or date rape variety.
