It took a jury little more than two hours to find former
Devereux School employee Darren Boyer Thomas guilty of raping and
impregnating a developmentally disabled former resident of the
school. The victim – who was a resident at Devereux for more than
10 years – was 27 years old when the rape occurred in late 2003,
but the crime was not discovered until her pregnancy was noticed
several months later. Both prosecution and defense attorneys
believe the quick verdict was the result of DNA evidence presented
during the trial that directly linked Thomas to the unborn fetus.
Thomas – who also faces charges of perjury for his testimony in a
pretrial hearing – looks at as many as eight years in prison at his
sentencing hearing on July 11.
