San Marcos High School junior Graham Heimberg (pictured) aims to
politically activate a largely ignored demographic by launching an
on-campus voter registration drive. And he’s done his homework: At
San Marcos alone, 271 out of 500 seniors will be 18 years old by
June 6, and are therefore eligible to register now. Heimberg — who
is receiving credit for his efforts from his leadership
class — also motivated students at Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara, and
Bishop high schools to begin voter registration at their own
schools. Graham is the younger brother of Brian Heimberg, who works
on the campaign staff of 2nd District supervisor candidate Das
Williams. Graham said he conceived the idea when his brother was
thinking aloud at the dinner table about how to reach more voters.
The registration drive commences during lunch hour on May 15,
followed by a 2nd District Candidates’ Forum at 6 p.m. that night
in the San Marcos auditorium.
