Santa Barbara police officers tasered a 66-year-old man with the word “Trick” tattooed on his forehead after police say the knife-wielding man lunged at an officer early Monday morning. Police arrested Albert Corbett, charging that he tried to stab a police officer who stopped him in connection with a break-in that recently occurred at Mac’s Grog ‘n’ Groc. Police say Corbett is on parole for a prior conviction for violently resisting arrest and has a history of cop-related violence. He was arrested 19 years ago on State Street after charging an officer with a samurai sword.

Sheriff’s deputies broke up what appears to have been a Nigerian smuggling ring on October 4. After getting tips about suspicious packages being sent to an address in Goleta, the detectives served a search warrant on the home of Maximilian Frausto, where they found items — including computers, DVD players, stereo equipment, and laboratory pipettes — that were purchased using fake credit cards. According to detectives, Frausto was paid by Nigerian scam artists to receive the shipments, repackage them, and mail them to Nigeria. The District Attorney’s Office has not yet filed charges.

Police officers arrested Beatrice Ornelas Maldonado Tuesday morning on suspicion of embezzling $280,000. Maldonado, a bookkeeper, has a past conviction for embezzlement; police allege that her criminal activities at various financial institutions over the years have funded an art collection and the maintenance of three expensive vehicles. She was booked at the Santa Barbara County jail on numerous counts of embezzlement, forgery, theft, and burglary. Her bail was set at $65,000.
