Spring Fashion

During the spring quarter, UCSB Prof Richard Ross’s Intermediate Photography class focuses on fashion, and, he figured, what better way to learn the ropes of real-world fashion photography than to take on the enormous task of orchestrating The Indy’s Spring Fashion photo spread?

“I wanted to give them some real-world experience, with expectations, responsibilities, and deadlines, as well as a creative arena, and I think they did great. I can’t really teach; the only thing I do is set up an environment where they can all learn, and where they can teach me,” Ross said.

We at The Indy were thrilled with the idea, and while initially these Gauchos may have been excited at the prospect of having their work published, we’re sure that excitement grew tainted once the ugly realization of exactly how much work was involved sunk in.

But they put their heads together, and despite a short lead time of just two weeks, they managed to pull it off: From initial concept all the way through to the finished product you’ll see on these pages, they handled it all, and everything in between. They even put in their time on the other end of the camera’s lens, doing the modeling themselves, and snagged some great examples of on-trend springtime duds (think primary colors, vintage, and dresses, dresses, dresses!) along the way.
