In a heartfelt ceremony featuring a cannon salute, the city of Carpinteria got its first – albeit unofficial – patron saint, as friends and family of legendary cowboy surfer Tony Alvis erected a monument to the La Conchita landslide victim along Chismahoo Road between Carpinteria and Ojai. In a celebration of his lifestyle, a massive sun-shaped iron wheel sculpture was erected at Cactus Corner on the old Indian trail late last month.
