Alexa & Hannah Borroel Meet Sugarland

When the Borroel sisters went to Nashville for the Country Music Association (CMA) Music Festival, they knew they were in for lots of twang, Southern glitz, and a great concert from their favorite band, Sugarland. However, the Santa Ynez teens never guessed they’d be featured on national television a couple weeks later. But that’s what’s happening this Monday, July 23, during ABC’s coverage of the June 7-10 event, when the girls got to meet Sugarland backstage.

The teens and their mom, Diana, fell in love with Sugarland at the Gainey Winery in 2005, and have since dedicated part of their lives to tracking down the country music band, seeing shows from Los Angeles to Colorado. And while their Nashville experience is billed by ABC as their “Lucky Day,” it wasn’t really a first: The duo and their mom have already been backstage to a few Sugarland shows, thanks to wearing “I Really Love Sugarland” T-shirts and befriending a promoter.

Nonetheless, it was a treat for the whole family. Said Hannah, an incoming senior at Santa Ynez High, “We’ve been backstage plenty of times, but this time was kinda special. We found out later that there were 200,000 people there!” Echoed mom Diana, “This was the most magical one. It was just them, and they got a personal private interview with nobody else.”

It turns out that Sugarland was excited, too. “They remembered us from each concert we went to,” said Alexa, an incoming eighth grader at Los Olivos Elementary. They even remembered the family bringing them wine from the valley, said Hannah, who added, “They were kinda like, ‘How do you guys always get backstage?’ But we were still blown away-I don’t think I said anything.”
