LEPRECHAUNS LIKE WHOA: It’s about time St. Patrick’s Day fell on a Saturday, to allow for plenty of time to take in all the events around town and a whole Sunday to deal with the hangover. There are a ton of events blowing up, so let’s keep the listings quick and dirty.

The always-eclectic SOhO is offering a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with Particle, a Los Angeles-based group that offers up jam band dynamics with electronica elements. The fun starts at 9:30 p.m. If you’re looking for a little punk rock to go along with your St. Paddy’s Day festivities, local label Pirish Records is hosting a night of live music at Velvet Jones with headliners Code 415. Wildcat Lounge is offering DJs Nagai and Hogg, part of its usual S.B. Therapy lineup. The Kitty is the best singles bar in town, however, so keep it on your radar.

You’ve got two chances to check out the inimitable Foggy Dew, first at Dargan’s playing on a double bill with Dansair from noon to 4 p.m. If you’re not foggy enough after that, take a quick disco nap and rejoin the group at State & A Bar & Grill from 7-10 p.m.

The Hotel Mar Monte is going all-out with a buffet and live music from Area 51. It’ll cost you a cool $35 and starts at 5 p.m., but might offer a nice respite from the inevitably chaotic State Street scene-call 963-0744 for details. And Sharkeez is hosting a Best Irish Jig and Best Irish Princess beginning at 9 p.m. for the more traditionally minded. – Max Burke

FOLK FLAVOR: Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, and Joan Baez hold their places in the annals of folk as a few of the truly great artists of the pared-down, country rock style. Kris Delmhorst and Ana Egge have followed in their footsteps. Delmhorst uses reworked poems by Browning, Byron, and Whitman which celebrate language and melody. Alternately, Egge plays gracefully onstage with an assortment of instrumental styles ranging from the pedal steel (country), jazz (trumpet), and pop (electric guitar) variety. Come and experience their poetic originality this Tuesday, March 20 at SOhO at 8 p.m. – Shelya Molho

GOING BRAZILIAN: What can be more exciting than being in a room filled with Brazilians? Well, nothing, unless you add some great music and traditional Brazilian dance into the mix. Vanessa Isaac “Born in Brazil” will be gracing the stage of SOhO along with an assortment of guests, most of whom are Brazilian imports. Special guest performer Gabe Lackner will play, along with artists Randy Tico, George Friedenthal, and Chris Judge. This special night, taking place Thursday, March 15, will act as a benefit for nonprofit empowerment works and the Ginga Multicultural Center. Call 962-7776 for more info.– SM

HARDER STILL: Among some common misconceptions are: toads can give people warts, koalas are bears, and biker metal music is just for people who ride hogs and wear black leather jackets. Well, I can’t say much about the first two, but as for the metal music, check it out for yourself. The band Retrodemon, with GC and Alastair playing both vox and guitar, Dan on bass, and Tyler on drums-apparently these are first-name-only types-hits the Velvet Jones stage with Beltfed and Cruster. Among some of the band’s influences are Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, and Jane’s Addiction. Come rock with this Santa Barbara band on Friday, March 16.– SM
