Yahoo!In conjunction with each of its shows, Gallery Ocho has begun hosting Dinner in the Gallery, featuring food from bouchon, expertly paired wines, and a facilitated discussion with the artists.
The gallery’s diminutive size dictates the intimacy of the gathering, and the first 15 people to reserve a seat will enjoy the opportunity to wine and dine with fellow visitors, Ocho curators Casson and Anna Demmon, and the little gallery’s currently featured artist. December’s dinner — the second in the series — features Julie Rofman, whose large-scale abstract paintings garnered a prestigious 2007 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Rofman’s soaring landscapes of manufactured ruins present a beautiful look at the aftermath of disaster.
Guests gather at 7 p.m. for wine and mingling before dinner is served. The elegantly appointed tables are carefully assigned to keep parties together, and smaller parties are paired so that everyone is seated next to someone who might interest them. Chef Josh Brown creates a personalized menu for the event, consisting of three separate courses. Mitchell Sjerven, proprietor of bouchon, personally supervises the event — with help from a waiter or two.
An open discussion with the artist, led by the gallery owners, ensues throughout the meal, creating a dynamic and interactive exchange of thoughts as diners savor their tasty selections. During dessert, guests are invited to roam the gallery, take a closer look at the art, and select the piece that will earn their red dot.
Each of these unique evenings cost $98 per person, which includes dinner, wine, tax, and gratuity. “It’s very cozy, romantic, and lovely,” explained Anna Demmon. “An urban offering in a small city with a hopeful art scene.”
