New Dimensions in Personal Mythology

The Lowdown: Ever think of yourself as Hercules, Pandora, or Sir Galahad? Everyday life might feel mundane, but there are mythic aspects to it that we aren’t aware of most of the time. Think about it: You get handed a huge assignment at work that even your boss recognizes is a “Herculean task.” Or maybe your reluctance to bring up certain topics at a social gathering is out of fear of opening a “Pandora’s Box.” And then there always seems to be some elusive goal out there-whether it’s world peace or a cure for cancer-that we refer to as a “Holy Grail.”

Studying the themes in mythic stories is one way to make sense of an inner journey we all travel, and the speaker for the upcoming Mind & Supermind lecture is just the person to guide us through that process.

Jonathan Young, Ph.D., who assisted famed mythologist Joseph Campbell for many years, was the founding curator of the Joseph Campbell Archives & Library and created the Mythological Studies Department at Pacifica Graduate Institute. As this season’s Mind & Supermind “Local Luminary,” he will discuss how classic myths can help us get a sense of our own life stories, how we can use them to discover hidden strengths and cherished values in ourselves, and nurture our best qualities.
