    Magic Gifts for You

I want to give you a million feathers to keep you

warm and snug on a cold, starry night.

I am giving you the North Star to guide you and your heart.

Here is a horse to ride away from danger.

I want to give you the first star so you could

    wish your troubles away.

I am sending you a somersault

to tumble out of the rough times in life.

I am giving you the sunset so you can ride to

the other side of the world for a day

and the wind of the ocean waves to cool you.

Here is the moon to light up your dark nights.

I will send you a mountain stream

to slurp the cool spring water.

I want to give you a pile of laughter

    when everything is so serious.

I am sending you a pillow for you to have sweet

dreams on and float across the blue sky.

I want to give you a magic pencil

that will draw a smile on your face and

make anything you wish come real.

Here is a compass to guide you to safety.

I will give you a shooting star so you

can lift up into space and see the earth

    from a bird’s eye view.

I am sending you a meadow of soft, silky, wonderful

imagination and a piece of paper

in the shape of a heart

to tell you that people still care.

by Ms. Pearson’s 4th grade students to the students at Cold Springs School, a third of whom lost their homes to the Tea Fire

    I Want to Give You

I want to give you a catapult to launch you

away from danger and a magic plate of cookies

so you always have a snack.

Here is a fancy blue dress so you can walk on water.

I will send you the ocean to chase the flames away.

Here is a pair of ears always listening to Mozart.

    I want to give you

the deep waters of a blue lake.

I am sending you a soft blue blanket

that has a thousand stars for you to wish on.

I want to give you beautiful trees of fall leaves

and a dove that will rise you

    above the clouds.

I am giving you a meadow of warm sweet grass

that you can lie on and a magic backpack

    to keep your treasures safe.

Here is a creek for fresh water.

I am sending you a velvet door opening to a land

    where everything is perfect.

I want you to have the wind, rain, and ocean

to keep in a sparkling star box.

Here is a cozy cloud bed to drift away on.

I’m sending you some wings to fly

and a kitten to curl up with..

Here is a rushing waterfall to sing to you.

I will give you the stars

so you can make your way through the universe.

Here is a suitcase that has all the wisdom

    of your imagination.

I am giving you a rainbow of all the colors

in the world that will never fade away.

I want you to have a horse to ride

through all your dreams coming true.

I want to give you tomorrow so you know

how it will be, and a river of hope.

by Ms. Gallo’s 3rd/4th grade students to students at Cold Springs School, a third of whom lost their homes to the Tea Fire

These poems were arranged by poet-teacher Lois Klein
