Holidays are traditionally celebrated with music, something that can be appreciated by all. Jews may not be particularly enthused by the overtly Christian themes of Handel’s Messiah, and Christians are unlikely to know the words to the traditional songs sung at a Hanukkah celebration. But the artistic beauty of expression is universal. In that spirit, Your Worship has found the best of Santa Barbara’s holiday musical offerings between now and the end of December.

Santa Barbara Master Chorale’s Annual Christmas Concert

Each year, the Santa Barbara Master Chorale — one of our city’s best community choral groups — puts on a Christmas concert, both to raise funds for other programs throughout the year and to spread some holiday cheer. Volunteers audition for their spots in the group, ensuring a pretty high level of competence in the singers who participate, and this year’s concert is also a sing-along, giving the audience a chance to get in on the fun. The Westmont College Chamber Choir will also participate. The program’s not the usual parade of Christmas favorites; traditional music from England, Africa, Spain, Poland, and Canada will be featured instead. And as a bonus, refreshments will be served after the show! The concert will take place on Sunday, December 14, at the Unitarian Society Sanctuary at 1535 Santa Barbara St., at 7 p.m. Call 967-8287 or visit sbmasterchorale.org for more info.

    The Annual Messiah Sing-Along

For anyone who missed last week’s lovely performance of Handel’s Messiah at the Granada, there’s another opportunity to hear this classic piece — and jump in on the choruses. Sponsored by KDB FM, the concert will be, as usual, at the First Presbyterian Church at 21 E. Constance Ave. Tickets and scores can be purchased at either Chaucer’s Bookstore in Loreto Plaza, or at Santa Barbara Sheet Music at 1036 Santa Barbara St. Anyone, of any faith, ought to give this event a chance; the Messiah has special meaning to devout Christians, but it’s truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. A side benefit of attending is that proceeds will be donated to the Food Bank of Santa Barbara County.

A Free Family Hanukkah Concert at Congregation B’nai B’rith

Featuring the Shir Hadash Youth Choir, this Hanukkah concert will blend traditional Hanukkah music with newer favorites. Cantor Wally Schachet-Briskin, who will join B’nai B’rith’s Cantor Mark Childs in leading the concert, is also a composer, and some of the selections will be his own originals. He’s known as a funny and charismatic personality, and the evening ought to be both entertaining and spiritual. There will be a dinner after the event, which will also include Rabbi Steve Cohen lighting the Menorah. Congregation B’nai B’rith is located at 1000 San Antonio Creek Rd., and the concert begins at 4 p.m. on December 21. Call 964-7869 or visit cbbsb.org.
