The Lowdown: It’s not often that you get the chance to attend a lecture by someone who is an initiated village elder, medicine man and diviner who has also earned three Master’s degrees and two doctorates—one in political science and one in literature—from the Sorbonne in Paris and Brandeis University In Boston. Those accomplishments alone make Malidoma Somé someone worth listening to, but even if that’s not enough to get you to the Lobero Theatre next Monday evening, consider the topic of his presentation, “Calling on our Ancestors: The Healing Connection.” As he states on his website, “at this critical time in history, the earth’s people are awakening to a deep need for global healing.” When you consider the popularity of recent documentary films and magazine articles on the topic of sustainability, global healing and healing in general, you know he’s on to something.
In this third Mind & Supermind presentation of 2008, Malidoma will share the wisdom and practices that have sustained his people, the Dagara of West Africa, for thousands of years. He sees his work as something he does on behalf of community elders around the world, guiding people from all cultures toward mutual understanding and respect for each other and nature.
