The Santa Barbara Zoo announced on 2/4 the death of Sophie, a 21-year-old male Giant Anteater, misidentified as a female at birth. Believed to have been the longest-lived captive-born male anteater in U.S. zoo history, Sophie was euthanized on 1/31. He suffered from severe arthritis.
