One of Santa Barbaran's urgent pleas for protection has been answered. A new Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Focus Group has been formed. Things are looking up for the public when County Supervisors Carbajal and Wolf, Santa Barbara's Mayor Blum, Goleta's Mayor Blois, Santa Barbara Councilmember Das Williams, Santa Barbara School Superintendents Brian Sarvis, Carpinteria School Superintendent Paul Cordero, Jan Faucett from Santa Barbara County, and Goleta School Board Member Susan Epstein sit together around a huge oval table at the county building. Their purpose is to give real attention to what can be done to protect the public from toxic pesticides, and form a more uniform pesticide policy that reduces and eliminates pesticides. Adding to this illustrious mix are Eric Cardenas of the Environmental Defense Center, Santos Escobar of Santa Barbara City Parks, Corey Welles of Lotusland, and me, the executive director of Pesticide Awareness and Alternative Coalition (PAAC). This powerful group can give unprecedented meaning to the words public protection.
Never before in history have these jurisdictions and agencies come together to work for a safer environment. I proposed these inter-jurisdictional meetings to Supervisor Carbajal last year. He loved the idea and has put his energy into making these historic meetings possible, and successful. Supervisor Wolf has brought needed support for the meetings as well. Now as we watch closely, there is hope that these meetings can potentially result in safer, healthier communities for all of us. —Estelle Foster
