Give Wings to Your Dreams: Reawaken Your Joy and Passion for Life is a new book by Lauren Sullivan, who moved to Santa Barbara to pursue her own dream of being a life coach and writer-a career that’s satisfied her like no other. In Give Wings, she shares some of the methods through which any woman can find happiness and take control of her own life. Sullivan will be signing copies of Give Wings on Saturday, January 12, from noon to 4 p.m. at Barnes & Noble (829 State St.).

1) Feminist Attitude: Sullivan is truly committed to the idea that women can control their own destinies. A professional and a mother at the time her husband became addicted to crystal meth, Sullivan overcame her familial meltdown and stress-induced career crash to transform her own life. The troubles she’s seen-and the way she’s handled them-will inspire any woman who desires to find a new path in life.

2)A Positive Attitude: Give Wings has a lot to do with the idea of the power of positive thinking. Sullivan encourages her readers to persevere in the face of adversity and to keep an optimistic view even when the outlook seems bleak. Reducing stress and thinking positively, she believes, are crucial for health and success.

3)Personal Clarity: One principle Sullivan stresses more than almost any other is the idea that before you try to achieve what you want, you have to know what that is-a deceptively simple concept she feels many people seem to miss. Defining a goal is the first step in reaching it, as she discovered when she began a new career as a life coach, the path that led her to penning the book. Several chapters of Give Wings provide tips and advice for how to imagine possibilities and really think about how you enjoy spending your time.

4)Personal Strength: Unlike some self-help gurus and life coaches who stop at the idea of optimism and goal-forming, Sullivan understands how hard it can be to move forward with an idea. Her transition from being happily married and in a stable career to being a single mother in a different profession wasn’t easy; no major life change is. Positive thinking isn’t enough. Hard work, on the other hand, will get you there, and Sullivan knows it. Give Wings to Your Dreams isn’t just an easy fix: It’s a guide to changing your life both for good and for the better.
