Update: Evacuation Information for the Gap Fire

Shelter for People

A shelter has been set up by the American Red Cross at San Marcos High School for those evacuated due to the Gap Fire. San Marcos High School is at 4750 Hollister Avenue in Santa Barbara.

Vulnerable Populations

People who are unable to evacuate without assistance should call 911 for ambulance transport. Be prepared to bring any medications and other medical equipment they will need at the shelter.

Animal Sheltering

Residents in areas under evacuation order or warning due to the Gap Fire are able to bring their pets with them to the shelter set up at San Marcos High School. The pet sheltering area has been set up in the tennis court area. Residents are asked to bring their pet’s crates, food and water bowls with them if possible as these items will be more familiar for their pets. Crates and bowls will be available for those who aren’t able to bring them. Please call 681-4332 for questions about animal evacuations.

People who need assistance in transporting horses or other large animals should also call 681-4332.

The school is being used by Santa Barbara County emergency services personnel as a staging area and as an incident command center.

Approximately 300 students currently attending summer session classes at the high school are affected.

It is very sad to hear the tragedy. I congratulate the team at Independent Com for giving right information in the time of need. May GOD saves those who are in need.

Given the proximity of the fire to populated areas, I'm a bit surprised that the air attack is not yet underway at 6:40 AM. It's been light for about an hour. Aren't they being a bit casual about this? I can understand why it's too risky to fly low at night, but why couldn't they have everything ready to start operations at the crack of dawn?

Thank you for keeping us up to date! Also there is a frequently updated RADIO RECORDING of "latest" resident INFORMATION such as road closures, evacuation, and so on. This is good for when you cannot see print media or just have a few minutes to get updated. In certain areas of San Marcos Pass also check "public information radio station" AM 1040 for the local area Wildland Residents Association, Inc. "GAP FIRE" report (south radio coverage is much of Goleta to West Santa Barbara City and also www.wildlandresidents.org). Of course there is local media such as news and broadcast websites such as this government web sites as well.

Ps, Like the 27th of June 1990 Paint Fire, Because of the possiblity of hot embers, large amount of "fuel" (tall brush) and fire heat "flying", if later the wind picks up in those kinds of high winds the fire can actually move nearly as fast as the wind is moving (up to a mile a minute!).

Updates on evacs?
Radius?
We have friends in and around the area and we are downtown and have space.
My son and i saw the blaze last night from our house downtown.
It looked rather bibllical...ie a burning bush.
Rather scarry for an 11 year old.
And then we realized we have friends up that way.
We would like to do what we can,if there is a need.
Just can't imagine going through last years miseries again.
My throat hurts just thinking about it.
Rough air.
Must be hell in Goleta today.
White smoke?

Anyone need a place to stay?

Thanks Ray.
Best Fire reporting EVER!!!!!
Ever!
Saved us from shotty info last year.
xo
