UCSB announced on 6/30 a decision to lower requirements for enrollment. Currently, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and completion of 15 approved college preparatory classes. The proposal, which would take effect for freshmen enrolling in fall 2012, sets requirements of a minimum GPA of 2.8 and 11 completed college preparatory classes.

A new study by UCSB’s Palm Center, which specializes in issues involving gays and lesbians in the military, found that women comprised half of U.S. Army and Air Force personnel discharged under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, despite the fact that women comprise only a small percentage of those branches. Palm Center director Aaron Belkin said a lack of research into the experience of gays in the military was a major factor in this disparity. (/palmcenter703)
