Law and Disorder 7-17

UCSB Law and Society Professor Jacqueline Stevens published a study in The Nation on 6/23 concluding that immigration laws are so convoluted that they result in the deportation of U.S. citizens and legal residents on a daily basis. Citizenship can be difficult to prove because different laws apply to different birth years, she said. (/deportcitizen)

Dylan Corselius Willson, 22, died driving home from Isla Vista when his car hit a tree on the Highway 101 shoulder near Las Positas Road at 1:40 a.m. on 7/14. Earlier that evening, Kyle Martinez, also 22, was badly injured in the course of taking photographs while sitting in the window frame of a vehicle, which flipped over onto him on the return trip from Little Caliente Hot Springs. Driver Michael Donahue was arrested for driving drunk. (/willsonmartinez)

La Conchita residents’ lawsuit against Ventura County, in the wake of the 2005 landslide that destroyed 13 houses and killed 10 people, was concluded on 7/14. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Vincent O’Neill ruled the county was only liable for property losses, not loss of life. Plaintiffs claimed that a county-built retaining wall contributed to the landslide. A separate case, accusing La Conchita Ranch Company of contributing to the slide by over-watering the orchard above the town, is still in court. (/conchitavcounty)
