Where: 18 West Figueroa Street, 805-965-3210, nortonspastrami.com
What: East Coast-style deli featuring perhaps the best pastrami on the Central Coast.
How much? Small sandwiches start at $6; most large sandwiches average $8. Make any sandwich a combination with fries or onion rings and a soda for about $3 more.
The dish: Located just off of the State Street stomp, any local will tell you that Norton’s is the place to get your New York sandwich fix. First-timers should stick to the tried and true Classic: your choice of pastrami or corned beef on Jewish rye bread. When (not if) you go back, try the Reuben; just thinking about the melted Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing turns on my taste buds. If pastrami isn’t calling your name, try the French Dip or the BBQ Beef, both on a French Roll. If you are willing to take a gamble (and risk your cholesterol count), the Pastrami Dog is awaiting your visit, with all of the glory of the Reuben sandwich (with or without the dressing) atop a grilled hot dog.
