Congratulations to the Independent for featuring the brilliant article by Ethan Stewart [Greka’s Monkey Business, April 17] outlining the multitude of environmental atrocities committed by Greka Oil and Gas Corporation. Not only does the article enumerate a staggering record of infractions, but it exposes a company seemingly bent on unscrupulousness and deception. I suppose that in the corporate world, a business model that allows for one arm of the corporation to be bankrupt while the majority remains highly profitable would be deemed "brilliant,” but it seems as crooked as an old rusty pipe to me and inevitably some slippery stuff is bound to start leaking. I imagine they have felt quite well protected until recently with the apparent support of some North County supervisors. You’ve got to wonder about that gag order: Does it not just smack of some greasy guilt? Don't we, the public, deserve the right to know what's really going on in our back yard--particularly when the scenery keeps getting murkier? Ben Ciccati's equally brilliant and insightful artwork on the cover sums up the situation perfectly with the three monkeys ("hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil") sitting in a vile mess. Good luck with that Public Records Act request with the county. As heartbreaking as this whole thing is, I will nevertheless look forward to reading more of what emerges--however crude and toxic.
