Yahoo!Per the interview with James Q.Wilson [Red, White, and Better]. Tens of millions of Americans are worrying day and night about health care. Many are homeless. We are overwhelmed with national debt and taxation, and are gradually losing our freedoms through actions by politicians of both major political parties--however well-intended. The American dream of home is just that--a dream--for many working-class people. I suspect that through a combination of hard work and luck, Mr. Wilson doesn't suffer these afflictions.
Per his comments on illegal immigration, one thing that sets the U.S. apart from the Third World is labor laws. When President Bush says "They (illegal immigrants) do the work Americans won't do," he is saying they will work in unsafe and unreasonable conditions that no one should have to face. Supporting the unlimited cheap labor enterprise undoes the progress achieved by those who fought so hard to achieve workers’ rights. People on both sides of the political aisle need to realize this as they support the "guest worker" farce. How does Japan do so well without imported cheap labor? It hurts people on both sides of our southern border.
Also, think of George Washington’s quote, “Beware of Foreign entanglements,” in light of America’s current foreign policy. Upholding American traditions of freedom and high living standards requires more than simply waving the American flag. We can do better.
