Often, the person you see in campaign ads is not what you get after elected.
Third District Supervisor candidate David Smyser advises us to “check his record” in order to see what kind of a Supervisor he would be:
He claims he is not the developer's candidate, but finance disclosures show him backed by virtually every development interest in the County, plus more from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York.
He pledges to protect the Gaviota Coast, but as Planning Commissioner he bulldozed through approval of a precedent setting 15,000 square foot ridgetop home. He ignored the recommendations of Planning and Development, County Counsel, the Gaviota Coast Conservancy, and the affected neighborhood.
He promises to protect agriculture, but as Planning Commissioner he argued passionately for a 16 sportsfields complex (designed to be a gigantic tourist attraction) on prime agricultural land. In his enthusiasm to boost tourism, he dismissed unanimous written opposition from the county's Agricultural Advisory Committee, a plea from the neighboring rancher, and strong protest from the all-agricultural neighborhood.
He says he will listen to everyone, but he evaded the candidates forum in the Santa Ynez Valley -- even after being given the opportunity to choose the date.
He promises to protect the environment, but his past performance has not earned him the support of a single environmental organization.
He says he respects neighborhoods and communities, but his past performance has not earned him the support of a single neighborhood or community group.
