Greka President Andrew deVegvar announced on 5/20 that his company has so far removed one million pounds of antiquated equipment as part of its “Greka Green” initiative, a response to scrutiny from environmental groups and the County alike over its oft-malfunctioning and oft-spilling machinery. DeVegvar pledged that Greka will continue to replace aging equipment and pursue other environmental causes, such as improved streambed protection from potential future incidents.

Two UC Santa Cruz scientists are attempting the daring rescue of baby peregrine falcons nested beneath San Francisco’s Bay Bridge for transfer to the safer environs of Santa Barbara County. Apparently, fierce bay winds would make learning to fly next to impossible for the young birds. Last year, two peregrine falcon hatchlings were discovered on Santa Barbara Island for the first time in 70 years.
