This weekend, head to Orella Ranch in Goleta for a three-day workshop on sustainability with an intro to permaculture. Titled Designing for Peace, the class teaches participants how to create a self-reliant home and culture, focusing on hands-on projects such as a compost-pile water heater, methane digester, worm compost bin, and fruit tree propagation. The class, facilitated by Loren Luyendyk, is Fri.-Sun.,

May 30-June 1, at Orella Ranch in Gaviota (orellaranch.com) and costs $150.
