Harvey Karman, 84, who developed and promoted safer early abortion techniques in the early 1970s, died of a stroke at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on 5/6. Karman served nearly three years in a state prison for his work with abortion, which was illegal before Roe v. Wade was decided in the Supreme Court. The soft plastic cannula – a flexible plastic tube – developed by Karman for abortions is still in use today.
