Repairs are underway for the Goleta Beach access bridge, which Santa Barbara County Public Works Department and state officials in June determined needed reinforcements to accommodate heavy vehicles. In order for the bridge to be fully functional, it will be closed for 12-hours at a time starting tonight.

The bridge will close at 10 p.m. tonight and reopen Tuesday, October 7, at 10 a.m. This repair cycle will continue through Thursday, October 9, when the bridge will reopen for the weekend until 10 p.m. on Sunday, October 12. The 12-hour construction cycle resumes 10 p.m.-10 a.m. through the following Friday morning, October 17.

Due to the bridge work, Goleta Beach Park will also be closed to the public at night but will be open during daytime hours.

Aside from the 12-hour construction blocks, additional work will be done on the bridge during the 10 a.m.-10 p.m. cycle. Motorists should expect delays up to 10 minutes and they, pedestrians, and bicyclists should proceed with caution in this area.

Once construction is completed, the Goleta Beach access bridge is expected to have no weight restrictions and allow traffic in both directions. The bridge rehabilitation is partly funded by Measure D, a 5-cent sales tax approved in 1989 allowing roads and bike paths to be maintained and safe.
