At 1:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, Frank Goss, owner of the Sullivan Goss Gallery at 7 and 11 E. Anapamu St., got a call from the police informing him that the gallery’s alarm was ringing. He hurried down to find that someone had thrown a paving brick through a display window. The brick was thrown hard enough that it created a rectangular dent in the wall behind it.

On Thursday night, the gallery hosted the opening of a show that Goss believes may have inspired the act of vandalism. The centerpiece of the show in the back gallery is a large sculpture called “The Aqueous Inquisitor,” which is an automated water-boarding machine, fully functional, and presented as if it were a trade show display, the accompanying promotional material explaining that it “allows the professional to focus on attaining results rather than dealing with operational and procedural issues.” As gallery director Jeremy Tessmer noted, it “sort of sells you on the possibility that this could be a real thing.”

Paul Wellman

Sullivan Goss Gallery director Jeremy Tessmer with the Aqueous Inquisitor, artist Jeff Sanders's fully functional, automated water-boarding device.

It’s fair to say that the show registers an objection to use of torture, and in case there is any doubt, viewers who don’t wish to purchase the actual machine can donate $50 to Amnesty International in exchange for a bottle of water carrying the Aqueous Enterprises International label and signed by the artist, Jeff Sanders of Ojai.

Goss said he interpreted the act as a protest of the show. “It upsets me that the only action they could take is anonymous,” he said about the vandalism.

Two previous Sullivan Goss shows with anti-war themes provoked menacing phone calls, Goss said, and about 30 requests by offended patrons to be removed from the gallery’s mailing list. Goss said he also had to call police on four separate occasions to help evict an enraged viewer. First there was the John Nava show, including the tapestry titled “9.29.06,” referring to the date that Congress passed the Military Commissions Act that “licenses the evasion of the Geneva Convention pertaining to torture and revokes habeas corpus,” according to the artist. A year later there was the sculpture created by Steve Cushman (an artist who moonlights as the executive director of the Santa Barbara Regional Chamber of Commerce) who, with several friends in the gallery courtyard on the night that General David Petraeus gave his report to Congress on the war in Iraq’s progress, arranged 3,787 green army men — the exact number of U.S. soldiers who had been killed at that point — in rows and glued their feet down as they are about to borne down upon and crushed by a large rolling cog.

There is no way of knowing for sure whether the brick was thrown through the window as an act of protest against anti-war art. The current show had not yet opened when the brick was thrown, nor had there been any publicity about it, but Tessman noted that the doors were not ajar during the several days that the three new shows were being installed, but they were open and members of the public frequently came in to look around.

Santa Barbara Police Department spokesman Sgt. Lorenzo Duarte checked the records to see if any similar acts of vandalism had been reported that night; they hadn’t. The fact that officers responding to the alarm left the offending brick at the gallery, indicating the futility of trying to lift prints from it, probably means they won’t be launching a full-scale investigation. But in case the vandal or vandals were trying to intimidate Goss, they failed. “Who is coming in the dark of night [to commit such acts]?” Goss asked. “My name is on the gallery and they can come by anytime to talk to me.”

Oh goody! I predict a debate on the definition of torture is and who it should apply to.. I'm not going to throw out the first pitch - I'll be in the batting cage warming up.

The photo in this story with Jeremy Tessmer holding thee brick is an art piece in itself. What a terrific gallery.

I predict a debate about how anti-war activists, and especially 9/11 truth groups like WeAreChange are known for using non-violent approaches and make a point not to destroy private property.

COINTELPRO agents, on the other hand, have been caught dressing up as anarchists wearing the same issue boots as the police, and incite violence, destroy property, then go behind the police lines for protection while the police crack down on the non-violent protesters.

Over at EdHat, Dan Siebert (DAN39) applauds this vandalism ("This act is better than any of the art on State street. A brick through the window. I love it."). Perhaps the police should ask him some questions.

Maybe it just fell off the "remodel" over at the Granola Building.

OK, seriously, this is an act of cowardice, or perhaps drunkenness, or teen-ness, or lunacy, and although it is most likely cowardice it is a bit of promo on Goss' part to claim it as such. Maybe he threw the brick...

Kratatoa, you obviously did not completely comprehend the comment I made. Your article is a perfect example, however, about agents acting as instigators destroying property and such in order to turn the police on the non-violent protesters.

Did you notice in the article you posted that there were no police at the 9/11 truth protest?? That was my second point, and the reason why I used the word "especially" in my first post. They don't want this important issue of 9/11 truth to receive media attention. It's too dangerous for them.

Groups like WeAreChange represent first responders and victims families. Right now money that was donated to 9/11 first responders and victims is being used to pay lawyers to keep these people from obtaining compensation for their medical care. The EPA was to issue statements regarding the air contamination at ground zero and warn against people being in the area unless they were masked. The EPA was told to change their statements from a higher source within the government to ensure everyone that the air was safe. Now tens of thousands of people are dying. The people who control our government don't seem to mind, though, because many of these victims have looked further into the facts of that tragic day and have discovered that our government not only knew about the attacks, but helped to make sure that they happened. They also helped the twin towers and WTC #7 fall via controlled demolition, according to Architects and Engineers for 9/11 truth, Dr. Steven Jones, Richard Gage and others. Some of the "hijackers" simply had their identities stolen and have been found alive in Saudia Arabia. How could some of the hijackers possibly be alive if this wasn't staged? You can research this stuff for months and still come up on new anomalies you haven't heard before. This is all well documented, and very far from being a joking matter. There have been several books written on the subject, I recommend author David Ray Griffin.

Our FBI knows who wired $100,000 to Mohamad Atta shortly before the attacks because they verified it, but they are too closely related to the CIA for it to become an issue in the press. The 9/11 commission report ignores the issue completely and says that all moneys that came to the hijackers were in small lump sums. The subject of who bankrolled the hijackers was said to be, "of little consequence." Please learn about the truth. It's very obvious once you have seen these verifiable facts which are distorted by media outlets like Popular Mechanics and just completely ignored by most others. I am a registered Republican, by the way.

loonpt, I must also insist you learn about the truth.

Do not believe that story about the hole in the window being caused by a brick. It was actually caused by a test of a secret government mind control ray. Witnesses saw the editor of Popular Mechanics placing the brick there later as part of a cover-up.

Look, the molten metal found under all three towers weeks later is real. The evidence discussed above is real. The research done by Steven Jones, Richard Gage and David Ray Griffin is real. The things you are talking about are fiction and you are using them to mock me. Do I need to keep saying that 9/11 truth is real? A good place to begin your research is the Final Cut of Loose Change, which contains very little of the material used in the first two cuts that the media and many websites talk about (they are worth the watch, but at times highly speculative about some evidence which is then altered and exploited by propagandists). The script of Loose Change: Final Cut was edited by David Ray Griffin who has written several books on the subject. It is meticulously accurate and very well documented.

By the way, your Popular Mechanics buddies are owned by the Hearst Corporation. William Randolph Hearst invented yellow journalism in the early part of the century. Yellow journalism is sensationalist journalism used to alter public opinion. The Senior Researcher for the Popular Mechanics article, which has been completely debunked by David Ray Griffin, Steven Jones and others, was none other than Michael Chertoff, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Securities' cousin, Ben Chertoff.

Why does anyone assign a political agenda to a brick? Has anyone heard that all of the artwork on State street was recently vandalized? I hope Mr. Tessmer will come down off his cloud and feel a little less self-important and self-righteous now.

To the person with the handle Truth_Machine

Since you posted my Edhat handle and my real name on this site, and because you state I may somehow be involved in this act let me say this. I contacted a lawyer and asked him if this was a case of libel. He said it wasn't.

So let me say this. You suck.

I was brave enough to state my real name on Edhat. How about you. I posted another response on Edhat that explained my pov. How about you? Give me a break. I put my name out there and you copied it and posted it here.

Truth_Machine??? Not even.

This is Dan Seibert, DAN39, and lowerwestie saying good night.

See you tomorrow.

Krakatoa, yes, listen to AShaw and go read the comments from the other article that he linked to. I highly encourage you to do your own research on both subjects. Look at the information from both sides and make your own determination. AShaw is only into looking at information from one side, and this limits the scope of his intellect immensely.

I've researched further, and what I found is that the WTC disaster was actaully caused when a janitor spilled bong water into the electrical system.

Lies or misrepresentation by omission have become the hallmark of our elected (or in the case of George W. Bush, unelected) leaders and our media. Examples: The Bush family profits enormously from years of business dealings with the bin Laden and Saudi Royal families. Neither are mentioned in Congress and rarely in the U.S. press. The 9-11 Commission Report is at best a whitewash, at worse deliberately deceitful. Iraq is blamed (falsely) for 9-11 and the Saudi Royal family is never once called on the carpet to explain why almost all of the hijackers were Saudi nationals. Elections in the U.S. are routinely rigged and stolen for decades, mostly by the GOP, yet there is virtually no media coverage on the topic and the Democrats don't pursue it.

When the nation is attacked on 9-11 despite a wealth of intelligence predicting a major assault by Bin laden, no one blames the Bush administration for allowing this to happen on their watch and incredibly, they almost win re-election using "national security" as a selling point. Kerry sees the White House stolen from him anyway by the RNC and collusion between voting machine companies and election officials at the local level. Finally, the state of American journalism declines to such a low point that intelligent news coverage can only be had by watching BBC America's World News and reading foreign news reports reproduced on blogs and progressive websites.

All of these developments have occurred with about as much subtlety as the brick that crashed through Frank Goss' window and yet no one hears the sound of our civil liberties, journalistic standards and social fabric splintering like plate glass. Although heinous, cowardly and wrongheaded, at least the brick thrower was angry enough to commit an act of civil disobedience. Pity that millions of other haven't followed suit with larger bricks thrown in the opposite direction.

emptynewsroom,

I feel your frustration. In my opinion, I don't think property destruction should be a part of any acts of civil disobedience, though. There may be an extreme situation where it is both warranted and effective, but brick-throwing or anything similar does not seem like either.

Kratatoa,

While your theory is humorous considering the circumstances of the comments here, it does not explain the molten metal found under all three towers weeks after the collapse. It does not explain the symmetrical, near-free fall collapse of all 3 buildings into their own footprints. It does not explain the clouds of pyroclastic dust that engulfed the city of New York following the collapses. I urge you to visit www.ae911truth.org and learn how these buildings could not possibly have come down from the fires and damage to the buildings. It is due to a very basic law of physics called the conservation of momentum.

For the Pentagon attack I recommend www.ThePentaCon.com. There has not been one clear video of the attack on the Pentagon released even though there were approximately 50 security cameras pointing at the Pentagon, and all of the ones taken from private property were confiscated by government agents. This website contains hundreds of interviews with official witnesses including key testimony from Pentagon Police officers as well as witnesses found by the Citizens Investigation Team in surrounding neighborhoods. Most of the interviews are taken on-site in order to avoid confusion. These interviews, when put together, are able to corroborate one fact, and that is that the official flight path of the Boeing plane that everyone saw heading towards the Pentagon did not correspond to the direction that was required to do the damage which was done to the Pentagon. Military deception, psy-op, call it what you will, this incident was much more complicated than it seems on the surface.

Yes, it is a common COINTELPRO technique to create information and media pieces which mock ideas that those in control do not want the general public to know about. Stooges then repeat these attempts at comedy which are often purposely unrelated to the subject matter. I mean, what in the heck do aliens have to do with the truth about 9/11? To my knowledge, absolutely nothing. This distracts potential truth seekers from finding out any more on the subject matter in fear that they may be socially outcast in real life. Fortunately that doesn't work on the internet, so the truth about 9/11 has already been distributed to millions worldwide. Many around you know about it. Your family members, coworkers and friends. Yet they choose to remain silent out of this fear of rejection. I have to admit it is a very effective technique.

I wanted to make your intentions known in order to show an example of how the establishment is able to keep certain types of information from the public.

Those who choose to educate themselves will ultimately encounter many people like you who attempt to block the free exchange of ideas through social manipulation. It is unfortunate, but knowing the source is helpful for combatting it psychologically.

Why do we have so many Hippies in Santa Barbara? Go away. Good its a brick who cares? How about cleaning up the streets and the creeks in and around SB. How about the homeless problem down town by blenders. Who the hell cares about a brick. Hell i did it. just to do it. It was a nice big window. Anyways moving on

805RunningCrew,

If somebody threw a brick through your living room window, I suspect you would be concerned not just with the property damage, but of possible future threats or violence perpetrated by the same individual or group.

If you had your McBush yard sign on your front lawn at the time, you would most likely consider that a threat against your belief system.

Personally I think homeless people add character to the town. I don't want people to be homeless, but there are going to be homeless people and I think it is important to be humane about the situation. What do you recommend we do with the homeless people here? House them? Give them a leg up? Kick them out of town and construct a fence around our town's border?

If all cities and towns were more humane to homeless people, then there would not be these 'homeless havens' like we have in our city. They would be more spread out, and they wouldn't be a real problem for any one town in particular.

Personally, however, I wouldn't mind if more homeless people moved to Santa Barbara because I have no problem with them at all and they seem to do a pretty good job at driving fascist ilk from our town.. or at least get under their skin a little bit.

I've had my windows broken before. I used to live on the end of west mission. At least one time a year. Big deal was it in protest of me or something i stand for? No, just some dumb ass with a bb gun shooting out windows for fun. Did it make the paper? Nope. Why not? Did i care nope. Thats life, crap happens. Why are people so into someone pitching a brick into this window? The owner turned it into art and is getting his 15min out of it. Good for him. And i DONT like Bush. He's like a retarded cowboy

This is not a threat against a belief system - it's just someone throwing a brick to hear the sound of the breaking glass. Don't assign so much meaning and intelligence to ignorant vandals. And don't feel so righteous and special and indignant, Goss and Tessmer. The same happened to less politically inflammatory art on State Street. Some people simply have no respect for culture and society and are destructive in nature - get used to it. The opportunity presented itself and it was taken - it's as simple as that. The idea of Tessmer throwing the brick for publicity, however, is not a far stretch - I can see the pride in his face.
