Artist Wants Liberals to Turn Other Cheek on McCain
Dubya Toilet Paper Inventor Dan Levin Rolls Out Version for 2008 Election
Sunday, September 21, 2008
Four years ago, Santa Barbara-based artist and graphic designer Dan Levin made international headlines with the most unlikely of products: toilet paper, festooned with the face of President George W. Bush, a poopy project to protest the re-election of the man many in America and abroad consider to be history’s most divisive, diabolical, and downright dumb leader of the free world. Since then, Levin’s Bush wipes have been featured on Good Morning America and David Letterman‘s late night show, used by rockstars Radiohead and Coldplay, championed by celebrities Cher, Jeff Bridges, and Jon Stewart, and even purchased more than once by soldiers fighting in Iraq. More than 250,000 of the rolls were made and distributed (most sold at cost or given away), models for Vice President Dick Cheney and right-wing pundit Ann Coulter also hit the market, and Levin, in turn, enjoyed far more than just 15 minutes of fame.
Get ready for round two in the lefty TP frenzy: Levin recently unveiled rolls for Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain - and sales have skyrocketed since the announcement of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as running mate. “I didn’t want to do the McCain toilet paper. I was burnt on the deal,” said Levin on Friday, explaining that he wanted to instead focus more on his “green, peace, love products” and “get out of this angry political bullshit.”
But his distributor said the desire was there, so Levin made up a batch. Sales took off “a little bit,” he said, but when Palin was announced, the interest increased exponentially, and stores that initially didn’t want a batch even called in and ordered plenty.

“I definitely don’t support McCain at all. I disagree with his policies completely, but the venom’s not quite there as it was with Bush,” said Levin, who said he could even see himself voting for the right Republican some day. “But with Palin, I’m so glad to have the McCain TP out there.” Among other gripes, Levin - a proud environmentalist who prints his rolls with soy-based ink on recycled paper - is concerned that Palin doesn’t believe in global warming and that, should McCain die in office, the country would be left in the hands of someone with very little relevant experience.
The Bush-themed toilet paper rolls can usually be found at record stores, novelty shops, and “open-minded” retailers in more left-leaning corners of America, including Midnight Sun in Santa Barbara. But Levin said that it’s also being sold at “quite a few stores” in Texas and the Deep South. “That’s amazing to me,” said Levin. “That takes balls.”
Despite the quarter-million Bush rolls - which retail on the affiliated Web site piehole.net for $9 a pop or $25 a four-pack - Levin is not a millionaire, and was even worried about his cell phone minutes running out during Friday’s interview. “If I made money on each one, I’d be sitting a lot prettier right now,” said Levin, who’s now 45 and has called Santa Barbara home since 1985. He recalls first getting involved in liberal politics while going door-to-door for George McGovern when he was not even 10 years old. “I am definitely in it for the cause and not for the money,” Levin observed. That being said, the rolls have supported Levin for the past four years, during which time he fled America-under-Bush, lived in Australia for a year, and then traveled through Europe and North Africa.
The Bush rolls were invented because he was “freaked out by the policies of this administration,” said Levin. “It is really all about greed and making sure the haves have more.” Most frightening to Levin are the Bush administration’s environmental policies, the sentiments of which are echoed in the Palin camp. “It’s just outrageous,” said Levin, who really doesn’t want to do another one of these rolls four years from now.

Just shows you how disappointed most rational Americans feel about this administration and how they have "flushed "the middleclass down the drain . My wife & I have worked hard & long to build our I R A & 401 K accounts for retirement . Ashaw , maybe you can explain the lack of oversight that has led to millions of Americans watching their hard earned life savings washed down the drain . You are worried about faces on t.p. . I'm worried about my family & their future as designed by Shrub & Co.

More tee-hee-hee antics by juvenile gremlins. It's in poor taste regardless of who is being lampooned. Grow up. It's right up there with vandalizing the White House when the last change occured.
No wonder people get preconceived notions of what liberals are.

AShaw askes: "Geeber, just curious - do any of your ilk, including Obama, have any answers or solutions other than "everything is Bush's fault"?"
As a rule they don't. They see Obama as the Messianic political figure (It could have just as easily been Clinton or any of the other Democratic front-runners) who will lift them from the doldrums.
These are the same people who demonized Bush for helping start the war in Iraq but gave a free pass to the Democratic senators and congressional reps for voting along with him. (Saying he lied to these reps/Senators yet failing to point out how so many people in the public as well as a number of Senators/reps managed to see through the "lie") These are the same people who whine about our eroding civil rights (and for the record, I'm one of those whiners as well and I also am against the war) yet were silent when the Patriot Act passed 98-1 in the senate and with much congressional support, with career Pols Feinstein, Capps, and Boxer, as well as Hillary Clinton and John Kerry voting for it. By the way, Obama voted for reauthorization of the Patriot Act: So much for HIM being any different when push comes to shove. But at least he's for "hope and change".
Where are the Hollywood activists such as Sean Penn, Barbara Streisand, and all the others on this? Why is it only the Republicans that get nailed? Both sides need to be taken to task for this war and our ongoing erosion of rights. Is THIS what the Founding Fathers wanted? (Rhetorical question indeed)
These people are no different from the "Independent" Republican talk show hosts who in the end are running to McCain as though he's THEIR Messiah even though months earlier they were putting him down for being too liberal.

As you make great attempts to be open and fair-minded, billclausen, I hope you don't mind that I expand the caricature of an Obama supporter you outlined above.
I'd hate for you to reflexively cite single instances as general cases, a grisly habit of which my dear friend AShaw suffers ("Just shows you how classless liberals are...and how talentless "artists" have become." History flashback: purple Band-Aids at the Republican convention in 2004).
At this point in the race for President here's what I like about Obama:
-- he is intelligent, communicates well, and has a passion and curiosity to both serve and solve;
-- has a strong record, resume, and personal history which has been impervious to scandal and skeletons (only the most rabid anti-Obamists still concern themselves with the faux scandals of "madrassas/ secret Muslim," "Rezko," "Wm. Ayers," "lipsticked pigs," and other Fox-Rove-Rush-Hannity-NRO briar-patch constructions (please provide something better than endless repetition without substance).

[cont.]...
-- based on my life experience of the last 30 years -- hiring, firing, and working in collaboration and from the ground up -- Obama is the best remaining applicant; not just by a little, but by a lot. I trust him to give the job his best; which is all an employer can ever hope for. His instincts are decent, have taken him far in this life, and he exemplifies the best of American self-made success. Hard work has served him well.
I see very little of the traits I hold dear in McCain. And I've seen none of them in Bush since 2000. (This needs updating but as of March, 2008, Bush had spent 452 days on vacation during his presidency. That's close to 1 1/3 years out of 7).
So compromised is the office of the President by #43, so impoverished is our country's standing and stature, that to see a humane, moderate, and accomplished individual who actually wants the job, instead of the lesser-of-evils choices people both parties have proffered in the last two cycles; well, I'm relieved, and can understand how many folks now have a crush after kissing so many frogs.
Will Obama disappoint? For me, he already has -- his capitulation on the FISA renewal, which forgave government spying, lawbreaking, manipulation of national security claims for secrecy and presidential power, extended the extreme privileges corporations inside Washington receive -- was a thorough, abject sell-out, and inexcusable.
But Obama still remains the only reasonable choice, as McCain has made clear his intention to continue the course and catastrophes established by Bush.
Try this: throw out the 15% of the bull-puckey and innuendo which is hurled at both candidates -- that crud that highlights the shadows, the pockmarks, and tales from the bitter or partisan -- and re-examine the two guys running for office on the simplest of criteria; comportment, composure, knowledge, communication, achievement, plays well with others, etc.
Who do you want running your company? Who lives next to you when the fire is coming over the hill?
I take the guy that drained the 3-pointer.

Let's assume for the sake of argument that Obama/McCain/someone else would make a great president: What good is it unless the people elect a supportive congress?
What it boils down to is that while we agree that Bush has been a nightmare for the country I disagree that apart from appearances, Obama will be significantly different from one another.

Answers ? Solutions? That implies a problem exists . Maybe we are making a bit of progress here . My answers & solutions will be in the voting booth where I will do my best not to let history repeat itself . The Rovian philosophy of dividing the nation & then insuring that you get just enough support to win has served us poorly . I will pick the candidates that have the best chance to unify the country because " united we stand , devided we fall " must be central to the "solution" of our current problems .

What exactly makes this "artist" a liberal? Nothing. I see no policy statements on the TP, nothing that would indicate a political position one way or the other except an implicit ad hominem attack on the unfortunate visages on the TP. That doesn't make one a liberal (as much as the supporters of the people represented on the TP would like it to). Real liberals are actually smart people with great policy (unlike the ill-advised deregulation of the banking industry that got us to our present situation - courtesy of the stupid policy of guys like Phil Gramm who John McCain thinks is a financial genius - LOL).
There is at least an instructional aspect to what they are doing as the quotes and whatnot make for interesting reading. But now you are wiping your arse not just with a toxic paper product, but probably with toxic ink as well! I personally don't use toilet paper, except in the rare case where it is extremely inconvenient. Sorry, you quixotic right wingers out there are tilting against windmills once again (maybe your feelings are hurt?).

AShaw, azuresees, are you two for real? First, visit http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/1... and you'll find, what would be obvious to most, that there are literally thousands of humorous products and art forms out there representing and deprecating BOTH parties. How on earth can you point fingers when people in your own camp are "guilty" of the same? I've grown so tired of the angry, ignorant, knee-jerk reaction of the extreme righties. It's obvious you're playing defense, and unfortunately for you, there's not much to defend. The Artist depicted didn't mean for this to be interpreted any other way than what it is ~ funny! asuresees, I suppose we should do away with all things humorous, such as the Bathroom Reader, comics, the Daily Show, LOL. I'd bet a dollar that if the artist had put Obama's face on TP, AShaw et all would have cheered him on and lauded his creativity. Give it a rest, please! Lastly, thank you Binky for your intelligent, constructive input here. What you wrote made a lot of sense, regardless of one's party affiliation. Of course, I doubt AShaw or asuresees would agree, but when you're going down with the ship, you don't see things as clearly. Oh, and paint me what you will, but I'm an Independent, not a far Lefty. But then, this is about TP and an artist, not the election, right?

At the risk of making myself sound like a broken record, (or to be more contemporary, a broken C.D.) why haven't the front-tier Democrats denounced the Patriot Act.
I've spelled it out clearly in this blog but the Obama supporters continue to attack the Republicans (rightfully I might add, lest you think I'm a stealth G.O.P. supporter) for erosion of our rights, yet don't address the fact that many Democrats (including Obama) continue to support the Patriot Act.
Let's also not forget that Obama has a war plan for Afghanistan.
Somehow I get the feeling that Obama and the rest of the Democratic Party establishment are laughing so hard that their sides are hurting at those who vote for them really believing they are going to undue the damage this current administration--which the Bush-enabling Dems, has done.
Remember the old saying: The enemy of your enemy is not necessarily your friend.

Having said all that, I think McCain TP is in bad taste and I wouldn't purchase it. This TP moves everyone away from the issues and it offends, it doesn't add anything to the discussion. We just wasted time discussing toilet paper. How about this bailout package, war in Iraq, health care, lobbyists, taxation, tax cuts, deficit. The presidential election shouldn't be a high school popularity contest. Remember when we heard how Al Gore wasn't charismatic enough, now that the dem nominee is charismatic, he's a Britney Spears celebrity.
BS, how about the friggin' issues. It's easy to sit around like old maids and gossip, how about researching each candidate's position then debating intelligently.

Here here DoctorKnow. This article was not about the campaign, but about an artist and a funny product he, even rather reluctantly, produced. And where did the post comments go? To politics of course. This is happening everywhere, as it seems this is the most historical election of our time. Ergo, people are tuned in, fired up, taking a stand, on the offense/defense, can't help themselves, LOL. The down side, people I've known for months, years, my whole life, I'm suddenly looking at in a different light because I realize their on "the other side". Somehow, politics never came up with certain people in my circle of friends. Now, I find that the topic can't be avoided. The up side? I'd be willing to bet that this will be the biggest voter turnout in history, which is NOT a bad thing, no matter which side you're on. The people have finally awaken. Thank God! It's about time. I'm excited, I'm nervous, and most of all, I'm thankful that there are folks out there that can make me laugh in spite of what's going on. It's freaking TP. People are dying because of our Government. Consider it a 5 minute laugh break from the 8 year heartbreak.

Arguably art... means it's art! I had art classes with Dan. Our instructor would ask us "What is art?" Some of us wanted to know - others mocked the question. Art is what ever catches your senses and sparks a thought. Maybe Man shouldn't try to create anything. As long as it doesn't hurt somebody or ruin our environment - all is fair. Maybe we are fools to think that the limitation of either political party will improve our lives. I'll cast my first ever vote... when the big charade is over. Less is more. Another artistic expression that people who just follow will also find difficult. Leader tell us what to do. Tell us your plan. Make us rich. Abortion is mainly murder. The environment should not be ruined. We could have learned volumes from aboriginal ways. We are in for some really painful adjustments. We all know it.
