Back in 2006, the UK’s The Boy Least Likely To broke onto the pop scene in no small way with their adorably whimsical debut, The Best Party Ever. Three years and plenty of label troubles later, Pete Hobbs and Jof Owen are back in action thanks to the release of Party’s much-anticipated follow-up, The Law of the Playground. Lucky for us, Playground successfully picks up right where Hobbs and Owen left off. Tunes like “Whiskers” and “Saddle Up” sound like a child’s take on a Wild West hoedown, while “Every Goliath Has Its David” is chock-full of cheeky bravado. In this world, kazoos and banjos abound, clap tracks are embraced with open arms, and the perspective is both wide-eyed and fearless. But just when you think Hobbs and Owen’s shtick is nothing more than artsy child’s play, they throw you for a lyrical loop and prove themselves the deepest kids on the playground.
